Motility - A Key Problem In SIBO
Prokinetics (agents that enhance gastrointestinal motility) are used to stimulate the cleaning wave or migrating motor complex (MMC), the “housekeeper” of the small intestine, sweeping away debris and bacteria. This mechanism is often not working in people with SIBO; in fact, its malfunctioning is a primary underlying cause. This is especially important because methane gas (which is produced from bacterial overgrowth) slows down and almost paralyzes the GI tract.
Prokinetics are also very important to promote bowel movements because every bowel movement causes elimination of excess bacterial load in the form of stool. Clear Digestive Flow combines many of the nutraceuticals, herbs and other raw materials into formulas that can improve the motility component of SIBO.
→ Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate: is the cofactor in the conversion of 5-hydroxytryptophan to serotonin
→ Ginger Root: contains several compounds among which is a mixture of zingerone, shogaols, gingerols and volatile oils. There are many other constituents but one in particular, galanolactone appears to be a 5-HT3 antagonist that might explain its anti-emetic properties and ability to accelerate gastric emptying. It modulates serotonin signaling by additional 5HT4 stimulation and by binding type 3 (5HT3) receptors in the enteric nervous system and brain stem, supporting gastric emptying, intestinal transit, healthy visceral sensation and upper GI comfort.
→ Triphala: is an Ayurvedic herbal combo that increases gastric emptying, gut peristalsis and increases gut muscle tone. Triphala combines three extracts: emblica officinalis, terminalia chebula and terminalia belerica. It is a mild laxative‚ can encourage regularity and healthy bowel movements as well as reducing gas and flatulence.
→ 5-Hydroxytryptophan: 5-HTP is the precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is a simple way to increase brain and gut serotonin levels. P5P is a cofactor in the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin. More than 90% of serotonin is made in the GIT, and the majority of receptors for serotonin are there as well. 5-HTP stimulates enteric neurons through activation of 5HT4 receptors. Caution if patients are on SSRIs.
→ Cinnamon Extract: contains antioxidants. Cinnamon is rated as one of the highest spices with antioxidant potential. Cinnamon is a very important herb when it comes to improving digestive health and in many GI conditions like SIBO, upper gut overgrowth, diabetes, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Cinnamon reduces inflammation, helps to regulate the immune system and reduce bacterial overgrowth. Cinnamon in studies seems to have many antimicrobial properties. In studies against pathogenic bacteria, cinnamon showed the highest antibacterial properties, out of many different natural essential oils (including limonene, carvacrol and thymol).
→ Gentian: is a digestive tonic. Its constituents include bitter glycosides, xanthones, phenolic acids, alkaloids, sugars and trace volatile oils. Indications include anorexia, atonic dyspepsia, gastrointestinal atony indigestion, flatulence, nausea, strengthens debilitated digestive system, malabsorption conditions including anemia.
→ Chamomile: is also known as “Mother of the Gut” as one of its key actions is to relax the smooth muscle of the intestine and provide relief from colic, stomach cramps and bloating. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties indicated for colds, flus, infections, Candida and SIBO.
