How pH works:
The human body removes weak acids such as apple cider vinegar and the citric acid in lemons through the lungs in the form of carbon dioxide. And it removes strong acids from the kidneys through the urine as well as from the skin through the sweat. However, our bodies can only process so much acid until it becomes overloaded. What happens if you don't have enough alkaline mineral buffers to deal with the acid overload? Before we answer that, let's take a look at how ph works in our bodies.
Technically, pH stands for "potential of hydrogen." The pH of a fluid tells you how acid or alkaline it is. pH is measured on a scale from 0-14 with neutral being 7.0; anything below that is acidic and anything above is alkaline. More oxygen is present when pH is above 7.0 than below which is why all pathogens thrive in an acidic environment. But they can't survive with alkalinity. An acidic condition is a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria, yeast and fungi while an alkaline environment helps to keep things in check. People assume colds and viruses happen when they catch a bug when in fact many common infections are actually caused by bacteria that are part of the normal flora already present in their systems. When their diet and lifestyle become too acidic, they create fertile ground for the pathogens to multiply and flourish. The blood must maintain a ph level of 7.35 to 7.45. If the pH of your blood goes outside that range, the function of your organs and your health is compromised.
When you have too much acid in your body, it first goes to the kidneys for elimination. When the kidneys are at full capacity and they can't accept all the acid that is being produced, the next step is for the body to use the alkaline buffers in your system. The alkaline minerals in your body act as buffers and mix with the acids that eventually become neutral salts. If you have enough alkaline minerals in reserve, then the acids cancel each other out to become the neutral salts.
If you don't have enough alkaline minerals in reserve, the body is forced to borrow minerals-including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium-from vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the acid and safely remove it from the body. Because of this strain, the body can suffer severe and prolonged damage due to high acidity- a condition that may go undetected for years. So, if the kidneys are overloaded and you don't have enough alkaline minerals in your body to buffer the acid, the body is forced to store the acids in the tissues.
